Hyperactive Children, Not Stupid Means


A hyperactive child is not always synonymous with stupid or less intelligent, but the child simply can not focus properly, says psychologist from the University of Gadjah Mada Adiyanti MG.

"Hyperactive children at high risk for failure in performing tasks that are structured, so that the child needs continuous regularity and perseverance," he said in Yogyakarta on Sunday.

According to him, things that were encountered is a failure in following the process of teaching and learning in schools, both inside and outside the classroom. Even in everyday social intercourse, hyperactive children often have difficulty, especially in maintaining friendships.

"Hyperactivity has three major symptoms, namely inatensi (can not focus), impulsivity (react quickly without thinking), and hyperactivity (excessive physical activity above the average child her age)," he said.

He said the physiological and neurological factors and the impact of the consumption patterns of certain drugs to cause hyperactivity. If the cause is not found, the child is not getting the way education is appropriate norms of behavior.

"Therefore, parents and teachers at school must be able to set the pattern of communication with children as well. The habit of acting rude and loud in children should be avoided," said the lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) is.

According to him, about 10 percent of primary school age children (elementary school) in Indonesia have hyperactive behavior. Hyperactive children pointed to the inability to control behavior.

"Conditions that lead to the activity exceeds the average number of children in general. Hyperactive behavior may harm yourself or others, because children sometimes can not estimate the impact of his behavior," he said. (****)
